Making Delicious Scented Soy Candles. How Do I Get Started?

Lately on social networking sites I have been getting asked questions about what is the written procedure for making scented soy candles.  How do I get started?

First you need to consider what you want to make. The Rose candle votive kit shown on the left is a perfect example of what I mean. Are you wanting to make table decorations for your bridal shower? Perhaps bridesmaids gifts?

Do you wanting to make candles as a hobbyist just to burn around the home, on the patio, or for gifts for your friends?  Are you an entrepreneurial teen starting to make a few candles just to make a little extra money?   This is very popular under Teen Money Making Ideas.

Are you wanting to start your own home-based business making and selling soy candles by distribution to stores?  Are you a serious business entrepreneur, who wants to start an online business reselling your candle wares?

 Now you are thinking about what to do, consider what will be your unique selling propostion (USP)? What could set you apart from the rest? May I suggest keeping simple records of each individual customer, their likes, their family, their interests, even what they purchased. Perhaps you will want to make a specialty candle of the month, or make special soy candle gift baskets. Or would you love to make candles for holidays.

After your USP has been decided upon, do yourself a favor, and take the time to write out a detailed business plan. This will help make sure you have considered all of the potential obstacles you will have to overcome to achieve success.

Making A Thanksgiving Soy Pillar Candle Centerpiece is Fun!

For the purpose of this demonstration, I will post my YouTube video showing how to make a thanksgiving centerpiece with a scented soy wax pillar candle.

When you make your own homemade candles you will want to use them everywhere. Combining candles, fall flowers, colors, scents and thanksgiving craft ideas makes for great family fun. Because of it’s simplicity, this could be used as a kids craft for thanksgiving.

Do it yourself centerpieces are fun to make, and they are a wonderful way to incorporate the colors of thanksgiving into coffee and dining room table decorations.

I bought a glass pedestal candle holder, a fall holiday wreath, pine cones and some green colored ribbon, which I made into bows. You can use store bought materials for the sake of convenience. But hopefully you are in a part of the country where you can find lots of beautiful natural materials outdoors. As a kid, we went out in the woods, and picked Bittersweet in the wild. It would have been beautiful wrapped around a candle base like this.

First I placed the candle holder upon a platter, so I could move it around with ease. On the platter, I centered the pedestal stand. Inside the glass candle holder I placed a 7″ soy pillar candle made from one of my holiday scented candle recipes, made from a blend of cinnamon and cranberry essential oils. Around the base I wrapped a fall wreath.

If you are using wild craft items, have floral wire and wire cutters to bind the stems, and hold them in the shape you desire. Embellish the branches with pine cones, and other items of your liking. I then place green bows around the centerpiece just to add a bit more festive look to it.

Don’t forget, you want to be careful examine your final arrangement so the decorations and fall flowers used cannot accidentally come into contact with the burning candle wax. Always keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets for the sake of safety.

Delicious Soy Candles Brings Fragrant Scents To Holidays

Everybody loves rich, aromatic, delicously scented soy candles. A few things will be important for you understand before you begin attempting to start making soy candles for your home based candle business, personal hobby, or just for gifts. However, there is an art to the process, and the uneducated novice can easiliy make “expensive” mistakes. Making errors in judgment can be costly, even dangerous because you may waste the soy wax, essential oil or fragrance oils, even candle wicks, or possibly even cause a fire from improper wicking.

You need to decide before jumping into any project, exactly what you want to make. Once you have made that decision, then you need to purchase the correct wicks for your particular soy candle wax, and even candle type you intend to make. Pillars, tea lights, votive candles will all need different sizes and lengths.  How much fragrance  or essential oil will your particular candle wax will hold. What’s to much, what’s too little? Third, but equally important, is the type of wax you are purchasing right for the candle you desire to make?

When mixing soy candle waxes with fragrance or essential oils there are known techniques that need to be followed or problems can occur. Take a look at  some of the problems I have seen frequently occuring, which I have posted on my FAQ page.

Plus everyone wants the most fragrant candes possible. So learn how to do it right, keep records of what you do, how you do it. (My book provides a test record sheet) Overtime, you will save yourself many repeats of failures, and the abiltiy to reproduce successes. When you find that “one” candle idea that gives you your own Unique Selling Proposition, don’t find out to late, you don’t remember what you did.

Soy Wax Melting Safety Tips For Scented Soy Candles

Here is what not to do when you burn your soy candles

Halloween, Christmas and Thanksgiving are coming soon, and more people make, use, and give candles as gifts then any other time of the year. So I just wanted to urge everyone not to forget safety concerns.

Learn how long to burn soy candles, how to trim the candle wicks each time, and how to prevent tunneling which the candle on the left exhibits.  When candle wax burns down to the base of a glass container, there is a risk the glass could shatter from the heat. The spilling wax, and flames could start a fire. (Click here for more safety tips)

When you work with flammable candle wax making candles you must be extremely vigilant, and NEVER get distracted for any reason.

This is just one of the many reasons, I only make candles using soy wax. Although soy candle wax has a higher flash point than paraffin wax, spontaneous combustion will still occur if the wax is allowed to overheat. 

The melting point of soy wax is normally between temperatures of 110°F and 130 °F. While water boils at 212° F, well below flash point’s of soy waxes, or paraffin wax.

Understanding the flash point of  every wax you use is very important. Each one can be different. When any wax reaches it’s given flash point it will burst into flames by itself. You must understand the wax may not bubble or smoke, and when it explodes flaming wax can be thrown in every direction.

Avoid this potential catastrophe! Don’t risk burning down your home, or serious injury. Always use a double boiler, or a candle wax melter when you are making your candles, and follow all candle making instructions, and read any instructions from the candle wax  manufacturer. A word to the wise – if the wax is smoking it’s too hot .

Never melt wax in a microwave! You cannot control the temperature wax is heated up to, and microwaves vary tremendously in output strength. For example, the butter in my microwave peanut brittle recipe burns in one microwave, and does not finish cooking in another microwave because of lower wattage.

Several soy waxes I’ve looked at recently have flash points between 450°F and 600°F.  In comparison, many paraffin waxes list flash points near 395°F.  The melting point of soy wax between temperatures of 110°F and 130 °F

Just one more thing. Never burn candles in front of open windows where curtains may be blown towards them from a breeze. Never burn candles where children or pets are, because they will always do the unexpected.
