Soy Wax Melting Safety Concerns

Soy Wax Melting Safety Tips For Scented Soy Candles

Learn What Not to Do When You Burn Soy Candles

Here is what not to do when you burn your soy candles

Halloween, Christmas and Thanksgiving are coming soon, and more people make, use, and give candles as gifts then any other time of the year. So I just wanted to urge everyone not to forget safety concerns.

Learn how long to burn soy candles, how to trim the candle wicks each time, and how to prevent tunneling which the candle on the left exhibits.  When candle wax burns down to the base of a glass container, there is a risk the glass could shatter from the heat. The spilling wax, and flames could start a fire. (Click here for more safety tips)

When you work with flammable candle wax making candles you must be extremely vigilant, and NEVER get distracted for any reason.

This is just one of the many reasons, I only make candles using soy wax. Although soy candle wax has a higher flash point than paraffin wax, spontaneous combustion will still occur if the wax is allowed to overheat.

The melting point of soy wax is normally between temperatures of 110°F and 130 °F. While water boils at 212° F, well below flash point’s of soy waxes, or paraffin wax.

Understanding the flash point of  every wax you use is very important. Each one can be different. When any wax reaches it’s given flash point it will burst into flames by itself. You must understand the wax may not bubble or smoke, and when it explodes flaming wax can be thrown in every direction.

Avoid this potential catastrophe! Don’t risk burning down your home, or serious injury. Always use a double boiler, or a candle wax melter when you are making your candles, and follow all candle making instructions, and read any instructions from the candle wax  manufacturer. A word to the wise – if the wax is smoking it’s too hot .

Never melt wax in a microwave! You cannot control the temperature wax is heated up to, and microwaves vary tremendously in output strength. For example, the butter in my microwave peanut brittle recipe burns in one microwave, and does not finish cooking in another microwave because of lower wattage.

Several soy waxes I’ve looked at recently have flash points between 450°F and 600°F.  In comparison, many paraffin waxes list flash points near 395°F.  The melting point of soy wax between temperatures of 110°F and 130 °F

Just one more thing. Never burn candles in front of open windows where curtains may be blown towards them from a breeze. Never burn candles where children or pets are, because they will always do the unexpected.

Let’s have a happy, healthy, wealthy, and joyously prosperous holiday season!

Teacup Scented Soy Wax Candles

Soy Wax Candles In Teacups Another Great Soy Candle Gift Idea

Teacup Scented Soy Candles

Gift idea soy candle in a teacup

Shopping around for soy candle containers I decided to see what I could find walking into my local discount stores. Uniqueness is really important especially in the beginning, when you are trying to set yourself apart from any competition. This is very important to remember as you are creating your own home based soy candle business. Since so many people are trying to get started making income from home on a shoestring, I decided to show you another idea on how to make a one-of-a-kind scented soy candle. Plus showing you another idea on how to find low, or no cost candle containers.

Make A Soy Teacup Candle

Make A Soy Teacup Candle

Many ”beautiful” Teacups and Saucers can be found in thrift stores. They make a really beautiful addition to any product line you might be trying to sell, or just to use as a great gift for birthdays, holidays, or perhaps a special occasion.

Here are items you will need to make Teacup Candles:

You Will Need The Following:

1. Teacups (the saucer is optional)  I found these at the local Salvation Army Thrift Store.
2. Soy Candle Container Wax (I buy mine from Candlewic.)
3. Candle Wick (Make sure the wick will be a minimum of 1″ taller than the top of the teacup)
4. Candle dye and Candle Scent (optional)
5. Stacking Pour Pots (Make a double boiler)
6. Thermometer
7. Hot Glue Gun

Teacup Soy Candle Directions:

Place a Wick In The Teacup Candle Container

Set a Candlewick In Your Soy Teacup Container

1. First wash saucer and teacup, and wipe them completely dry.

(You don’t want water in the wax, or water spots on your finished teacup or saucer.)

2. Select a candle wick, adhere it to the bottom center of the teacup using your hot glue gun. (I use a the hollowed out portion of a bic pen, run my candlewick into it, because it makes it easier to press the wick in place exactly where i want it.)

3.  Center your candle wick and hold it in place on the top of the candle container. (I use the glue to hold the wick on the dowel, and a bit on the side of the container to hold the dowel centered while I am making the candle).

4. Add wax into your double boiler, melt it, and add dye and fragrance following a soy candle recipe, or manufacture’s directions.

5. Pour melted wax into your teacup container.

6. Let candle cure for a minimum of 24-48 hours before lighting.

Wick A Soy Candle In A Teacup

7. Trim candle wick to 1/4 inch before lighting it.

To give you a better idea on how inexpensive it was for me to buy two sets of teacups, I bought two separate cups and saucers for only $2.00.  When I am making these candles at home, I will make up more than one type of candle in different containers to maximize my time.  Because they are unique, and can be gift wrapped very nicely, these will quickly sell for a nice little profit.

Making scented soy candles can be a very lucrative home based business model, for more information on how to get started including writing a business plan, scenting your soy candles, complete instructional guide books on how to make soy candles and tealights can be found on the homepage of Scented Soy Candles. Make Homemade Candle Molds For Soy Wax

By Debra Hardy  2010-08-24

How To Make Homemade Candle Molds

Making your own soy candle molds can be easier then you think, and there are numerous ways to create your own candle molds. If you don’t mind funny feet, and want a larger candle, you could cut the top off of a soda bottle. Just remember to look for smooth sides on your containers, if you plan to remove the candles to burn as free standing pillar candles. If the sides are not smooth, the candles won’t slide out once they are cured.  When beginning to look around for ideas on soy candle containers, the primary consideration is whether the container is smooth sided, heat-resistant, and leak proof.

Gardenia Scented Soy Candles – How to Double Wick Candles

My friend Shirley, (also the lady I just moved in) with raved about my gardenia scented soy candle when she walked into the house yesterday. Yes, I have been busy, because I just made more gardenia scented soy candles for our house.

In the video I used the fragrance Tangerine, but we really love the clean smell of Gardenia.  Shirley loved the fact our whole house smelled so fresh, I wanted to post my YouTube Video under GreenGardenerGal so you can see how I made the double wick scented soy candles.

When it gets right down to it, the larger container candles need more candle wick. This is necessary to provide the appropriate amount of heat required to create a melt pool that fully covers the candle surface. If you do not have the correct wick sizes, or quantites, tunneling will occur because the full surface of the wax is not consumed as the wax is burned.

See the article I wrote on candle burning problems for more specifics.

So on that note, I made this double wicked scented soy candle using a tangerine fragrance, and turned it into a video. Because wick placement correct wick placement is so important, I showed you one of the ways that I use the wicks in combination with a dowel rod, and a glue gun to secure the candle wicks exactly where I want them before I pour the soy candle wax.

How to Make A Soy Candle

This article is all about how to make soy candles.

Hi,

I found a nice article on how to make soy candles that was written by Sarah Johnstan another chandler who posts articles on the internet. She refers to eco-friendly soy candles as “earth-friendly.”

I like what she said, the first thing you need to know about when making soy candles is about the candle wax itself.
